Windows Vista and the screensaver

Posted November 21st, 2006 by Matt Berther

I had installed Windows Vista RC2 a while back, and just recently (over the weekend) installed the RTM version of Vista on my work laptop (a Dell D820).

One thing that has been driving me bonkers is that the screensaver refuses to kick in. I decided to finally look into what could be causing that, and went to Google. Google brought back a hit to this site that talked about a similar issue, where he realized the mouse was causing the operating system to not turn the screensaver on.

Surely, this couldnt be my problem… After all, Im running a Microsoft cordless mouse (Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000) and surely Microsoft software should work with Microsoft hardware. I yanked mouse and sure enough… the screensaver turned on in 2 minutes.

Fantastic… so where does that leave me now? In the market for a new mouse, I guess. Any recommendations?

I can recommend IntelliMouse Optical (http://aspnetresources.com/blog/good_clean_simple_hardware.aspx). I installed Vista this past week-end and was bummed out that Microsoft didn’t update their keyboard and mouse drivers, so I can’t use side buttons on the mouse or any “extra” keys on the keyboard. :(

I’ve considered carrying a corded mouse in my laptop bag, but so far have been unable to pull the trigger on that. I really like the idea of a cordless mouse for my laptop.

Ran across this site while looking for Vista screensaver problems (friend’s Vista screensaver only runs for 5 minutes) and found out why the screensaver on my laptop (XP Home)won’t activate using MS wireless notebook mouse 3000. I disconnected the mouse and lo and behold, the screensaver activated at the proper time.

It looks as if the mouse problem is not limited to Vista.

If you Navigate to ‘Computer\C:\Windows\System32\’ Sort by Type & scroll down to the Screensavers. Select & then Right Click on the Screensavers you want to Run. Highlight ‘Send to’ & Click on ‘Desktop (Create Shortcut)’. You can now run the Screensavers manually until a proper solution is found.

Microsoft now officially “sucks”, (though I’m sure many would disagree with me and say that they’ve sucked for years!). I really believe that they are no longer in touch with the public that “funds” their big corporation with thier hard earned money by buying their products. Every time they get something going good with fewer problems, they come up with another way of extorting our money from us and giving us nothing in return. Just when I get Windows XP down and they get a lot of bugs worked out, low and behold they come up with a new OS full of “crap” and problems. In my opinion, Micsrosoft is now more like our government than a company that wants to give us a quality product for a fair price. Just a simple thing like being able to buy a wireless Microsoft Mouse to use with a Microsoft OS and they can’t make them work together for a little thing like a screen saver and a wireless mouse. Shame on microsoft. I hope you choke on your bottled water Microsoft!

I am running Vista Ultimate and have been having screen saver issues. I do not run a MS mouse. It is a Logitech mouse. I also have a MS Fingerprint reader. When I reboot my system the screen saver will not kick in. When I go to screen saver options and choose a new screen saver it will then work..

It is driving me crazy to figure this problem out just like veryone else…

Is M$ working on this problem??

I have twp of the microsoft wireless mice 3000. I run XP at home and Vista at work and have a guess what? The screensaver does not work on either machine when the mouse is plugged in. As soon as the wireless mouse is removed from either machine then the screensaver works?

I will let you make you mind up as to what is the problem.

I have the screensaver problem in both Vista x86 and x64. i really have a mix, becouse im using the reciver of a Microsoft Wireless desktop 2000 (kb + mouse), but the mouse is a Wireless Optical 2.0. I dont use the mouse that comes with the “package”, but again the recevier works with my old ms mouse.

I have a homebuilt PC. 680I SLI/TWIN 8800 NVIDIA GTX CARDS with 350 G HD and 4 GB CORSAIR DOMINATOR DDR2 RAM. I’m running Vista Ultimate. I also was running a MS wireless laser mouse and keyboard 6000. I had a spare Fellowes wireless keyboard and mouse. I swapped out to the Fellowes keyboard and mouse and all the screensaver BS problems went away. I suspect the MS mouse problem must be tied to a frequency problem and will be curious to see how Gates patches this one.

Like a lot of comments about the screen saver not working with Windows Vista. I purchased a Dell insiron 1720 in December and the screen saver has never worked. No wireless equipment in the house at the time. The Laptop was straight out of the box so no had not done anything to the Laptop! I still think it is a Vista Bug. In fact I have seen a lot of strange things with Vista over the last couple of months the error log I am making is getting quit long, is Vista still in Beta testing stage and we are the testers? Oh the screen saver did work once about 5 days ago I was that surprized that my luch nearly feel on the floor. the wife thourght I had gone mad. Wirelees mouse and WiFi network was running at this time.

I have exactly the same problem, with Vista (Home Premium), on my HP DV9700 Laptop, just using the just the touchpad and built-in keyboard. Apart from Wifi network, no wireless peripherals are involved. To make the screensaver kick in again, I have to go into Personalise and either change the screen saver or activation time. It must surely be a Vista bug - I haven’t seen a similar bug in XP.

My screensaver was working fine for months, now suddenly there is an error - it cannot access the photos from my photobook. And rather than going to screensaver mode, it just goes to sleep. I haven’t done anything to change my preferences, and when I try to switch to another screensaver, it doesn’t solve the problem. I am basically tech-illiterate and would appreciate any basic advice anyone out there might have! Thanks!

My screen saver doesn’t work on Vista either. It turns on for a minute and then the monitor goes into a “power save” mode either initiated by windows or HP.

I tried to adjust the power save modes via vista but I’m still having trouble trying to get the screen saver to work. I even adjusted the monitor (HP f2105) to the best I can find, and still it doesn’t work. I’m googling for more answers.

My Problem was the screensaver wouldn’t auto start. Also It wouldn’t stay asleep either.

I have a PS/2 connected mouse and keyboard so it wasn’t the HID non-user input filter that was needed.

What was happening was the network adapter kept waking up the computer and resetting the screensaver timer.

To Fix:

1. Click “Start/Control Panel/System/Device Manager

2. Under “Network Adapters” is your particular “Ethernet NIC”

Right-click and choose “Properties”

3. Click “Power Management” tab

4. Un-Check “Allow this device to wake computer”

5. Click “OK”

Fixed.

Enjoy…..
